The number of people suffering from mental health illness has grown dramatically since the Covid-19 pandemic. A recent study in Ireland, found that more than 40% of Irish adults have a mental health disorder, with insomnia being the most common disorder, followed by depression.
In this episode Jonathan meets researchers on the west coast of Ireland, who are collaborating to improve access to mental health services for adolescents in rural and marginalised communities.
Meanwhile Kathriona is in Cork to meet UCC researchers studying zebrafish to explore whether the microbiome can affect hormones like oxytocin and identify mechanisms which could lead to better understanding and management of mental health illness.
